Magic, curses, unknown forces can all come together to change and mutate people. Dark wizards sometimes use their powers to create entire new species, whole cloth or through the fusion of other creatures. Sometimes the change is simply so overwhelming that no solid form can be garnered and the ill-fated creature enters a state of permanent flux and change.
