#RPG Postortem Studios Update April 2017

208307The image to the left is a crow munching on an eyeball the latest Clipart Critter stockart from Brad McDevitt.

We’ve got hundreds of pieces by him at affordable prices for your handouts or your own gaming projects.

Please support me via my Patreon – you get discounts for as little as $1 a month.

This month’s discount is on 100 Planets.

Some of the people who have unsubbed from the Patreon have talked about a ‘lack of engagement’, but I honestly don’t know what you want to know or to talk to me about. What more I can do to keep my patrons happy. I’ve been trying to do things like add discounts and so on, but without query or comment I can’t really know what to do.

Whatever work you’re supporting me for, please feel free to question, comment, suggest, anything!

As a loyal follower of this blog, you can also get a discount on 100 Science Fiction Adventure Seeds this month!

April

Discount Offer

13689Following on from the success of 100 Fantasy Adventure Seeds, this book provides you with a wealth of generic science fiction plots. There are 100 pages of ideas each with a base idea, three twists and an epilogue. Never be without game ideas again!

“This product is a GOLDMINE! As a creative GM as you are you can easily twist/tweak the adventures in this book to fit in your setting and world. I use it in my Eclipse Phase campaign. With this product you can fast and easy create ‘adventures within the adventure’ and side-plots and sidetracks.”
– Bertil, RPGNOW 5 Star Review

MARCH IN REVIEW
Gor’s art is finally almost done and I’ve been updating the backers more regularly over on IndieGoGo. I suppose once this is FINALLY delivered I can think about my next crowdfunded project – which is likely to be a multi-system, horror-themed ‘city dungeon’ primarily for 5th Edition D&D and Lamentations of the Flame Princess. I think I need a break though, and to assess why Gor took so long before I get into that.

I also need to keep support for Gor going while the license is held, to get as much material out as possible for Gor players. We already have one adventure out as an additional sort of preview, you can check that out in the recent products recap below. I’ve had to farm out writing on the Gorean supplementary material, which isn’t something I’m normally comfortable with, as well as moving beyond the usual scope of artists I have a work history with – so if you’re looking for art work, now’s a good time to apply.

I AM AVAILABLE FOR FREELANCE WORK:

DIRECT SERVICES:
Currently, my 2017 plate is clear and free for freelancing and consultancy. I’m pretty reliable and can offer reasonably fast turnaround. I can, perhaps uniquely, provide detail and grounding to scenarios – even dungeons – to humanise them and give them a bit of depth. Give me a try, see what I can do for your games.

I am a 17+ year veteran of the tabletop game publishing world with lots of experience in freelancing and self-publishing.

I’ve worked for Wizards of the Coast, Steve Jackson Games, Nightfall, Cubicle Seven Entertainment and more. I have also written fiction and worked on social media computer games, packing a lot of meaning into short pieces of text.

As a self-publisher, I have overseen every step of the publication process from concept through to publication including writing, editing, layout and modification. I also produce Youtube material and have begun producing audiobooks. If you need some narration for a video project or an audiobook reading, I can help.

Here’s some of the services I can offer, and the minimum prices offered – though anything is negotiable up or down depending on the client. I will work pseudonymously if that is a concern for you.

  • New writing (raw text): $0.03c/word (minimum)
  • Proofreading/Light Editing/Commentary: $0.01c/word (second and third deeper passes are possible).
  • ePublishing/RPG Publishing consultation. Skype/Hangout/Call: $20/hour.
  • Consultation on your game project: $20/hour.
  • Layout (InDesign): $11 an hour.
  • Stock Art Shopfront: Postmortem studios have a huge stock art catalogue from multiple artists and we’d love to add you to that storefront. If you’re an artist who wants to sell your stock art but doesn’t want to deal with the accounts and uploads etc with your own storefront (which would be my first recommendation) then I can do that for you for 50% (I round up your payouts). Even if you don’t want to do this through me I recommend doing it anyway for all artists and can consult on best practice if you need advice.
  • Voice Work: If you find my dulcet tones to your liking, I’m available for voice over work and narration, recording audiobooks and more. Rates negotiable, starting at $11 per hour.
  • Promotion/Interview: Free. If you have a product you want to pimp out or would like to just talk game design and culture you’re welcome to talk to me and appear on my Youtube channel.

  • The Alchymyst: A fifth edition character class for an ‘advanced’ alchemist.

Postmortem Studios Update Jan 2017

200973
Please support me via my Patreon – you get discounts for as little as $1 a month.

The horrible slasher to the left is the latest Clipart Critter by Brad McDevitt.

The Darkzel Scholarship is still running and donations of art and money will be running until the end of January. We’re having a lot of trouble getting backing and publicity this year so anything you can do to help – posting to art websites and communities, letting people know, would be appreciated. If you are an artist you can donate art for sale, if you’re anyone at all you can donate money, if you’re a student or an artist in reduced circumstances you can apply.

Getting the gaming community to help young genre artists shouldn’t be this hard! Getting student or hard-up artists to apply for scholarship funding shouldn’t be this hard either!

The Coming Year

This is going to be a year of changes I think. I need to continue to diversify what I do and to find ways to make additional money. I need to do more voice work, continue to build my Youtube channel, work on my fiction writing more and find new things to do.

The last few years have been tough. Years of depression have taken a toll on my capacity to work and the quality of work I’ve been able to put out. The culture of games has changed, and not for the better, from one of art and fun to one of politicised virtue-signalling, tone-policing and de-facto censorship. This isn’t anything new, but the culture wars definitely intensified and drew battle lines over the last year.

It has become less fun to work in creative industries and people have become increasingly willing to listen to easy lies, rather than to investigate the truth for themselves. To react without thinking or considering. To be tribalistic.  As a result game creators and fans have been demonised, blamed and slandered and standing up for them in any way has been painful. Similar problems have occurred in fiction, comics, computer games and elsewhere. Anyone outside those tribal lines, ‘left’ or right, has paid for it.

There has been a price for standing up against that, one that has been compensated for in the past by increased support from those who care about freedom and creativity (or simply oppose whoever you have pissed off) but that is not an endless well and carries its own restrictions. The lies about people do take their toll in terms of an unwillingness to listen or to provide benefit of the doubt.

Someone who champions you and stands up for you when you make fun of Social Justice Warriors and the Oppression Olympics, will turn on you if you explore the possibility of a Presidential assassination. Doing that, of course, won’t win you back any friends from the other partisan side. There’s literally no pleasing people!

Things have shifted however. There has been a change in culture which may result in more freedom in some ways, but now the threat comes in another direction. The fight for free expression never, it seems, ends. Just the source of the threat to it. Spurious accusations of racism, sexism and so on may have lost their power, but now the old nationalistic and evangelical right is flexing its muscles again, thinking that it now holds the whip hand. The battle may, now, shift.

It’s an exhausting fight though, with little thanks and little reward. Especially if you work in something people consider ‘insignificant’ or ‘trivial’ like games. It’s also a battle that takes you away from the process of creativity itself.

I need to strike a better balance.

There’ll still be games from me, a refocus, a seeking of more freelance work and a greater diversity in what I produce. I’ll also be trying to get back into art – which is what I originally wanted to do, back in the day.

We’ll see how it goes.

I started this process last year, and made some ground, but not enough and not fast enough. There’s more that needs to be done to make it work.

I am available for freelance work:

#RPG – Postmortem Studios December Update

The lovely zombie to the left is the latest Clipart Critter by Brad McDevitt.

The big update this month is that we’re running the Darkzel Scholarship again. We’re running it through Indiegogo’s ‘Generosity’ subsite this year, to see how things go. Unfortunately that means no Paypal donations, at least not directly through the page, but hopefully that won’t be too much of a problem. I’ll be able to accept more direct Paypal donations if people want to give that way too.

I’ll be doing video and other updates as the fundraiser bumbles along with more details, but the big push this year is to get artists to volunteer art pieces that can be sold to raise money in the longer term to support the scholarship going forward in the years to come.

If you are an established artist please consider donating a piece of art to be sold as stock art to support the fund in the future.

If you’re an art student, or an artist in reduced circumstances please consider submitting a piece of art to apply for the scholarship, which should amount to at least $600.

Whoever you are, please spread the word, let artists know and let other genre and game fans know so we can hit – and surpass – our target!

I am available for freelance work:

#RPG Postmortem Studios Update: August 2016

gor-illo38_sketch01

Here’s a quick monthly update on the current state of affairs here at Postmortem Studios.

Personal

After working very hard for a couple of months this last month was a bit slower, unfortunately. My health continues to improve and the summer weather means I’ve been able to get more exercise – but it also makes for more distractions (Pokemon Go and mowing the lawns, for example). All things considered, however, things are on the up and up and hopefully will continue to improve.

I’m still looking for suggestions of what I can offer my Patreon donors – so I can encourage more people to be my patrons – so if you come up with anything you’d like to see, let me know. I’ve improved my home computer setup with a high-quality microphone for better podcasting Youtube videos and recording audiobooks – so that’s something to consider.

Speaking of which, if you want to show me support, there’s Patreon but there’re other ways too. Follow me on social media, subscribe to my Youtube channel, retweet my stuff, leave reviews if you’ve bought anything of mine. It all helps and this kind of publicity (especially social media and good reviews) is the lifeblood of any creative person. If you have a podcast or Youtube channel of your own and would like me to appear on a hangout or similar I’d be happy to and am also available for guest blogging or contributions.

Work Update

This has been a consolidation and expansion month, investing in home office infrastructure and planning out longer term projects for the future – including the next crowdfunded project. I’ve continued to work on the FATE based Mecha/Kaiju game and there’s not a huge amount left to do on it, so hopefully it should be out this month (if No Man’s Sky doesn’t get in the way).

As some of you may have noticed censorship issues continue to be an increasing problem on the Onebookshelf sites. Hentacle and its supplements (and art book) were recently censored due to what appears to have been a malicious report. If you have it in your basket (and possibly wishlist) you may still be able to buy it. I’d suggest buying any adult oriented games you’ve had your eye on while you have the chance.

For two, open projects I’m currently looking for artists to work with. If you have an anime or cartoony art style and are looking for work, please get in touch.

Services

Currently, my plate is clear and free for freelancing and consultancy after last month.

I am a 15+ year veteran of the tabletop game publishing world with experience in freelancing and self-publishing. I’ve worked for Wizards of the Coast, Steve Jackson Games, Nightfall, Cubicle Seven Entertainment and more. I have also written fiction and worked on social media computer games, packing a lot of meaning into short pieces of text. As a self-publisher, I have overseen every step of the publication process from concept through to publications including writing, editing, layout and modification.

Here’s some of the services I can offer, and the minimum prices offered – though anything is negotiable up or down depending on the client. I will work pseudonymously if that is a concern for you, however stupid that situation is.

  • New writing (raw text): $0.03c/word (minimum)
  • Proofreading/Light Editing/Commentary: $0.01c/word (second and third deeper passes are possible).
  • ePublishing/RPG Publishing consultation Skype/Hangout/Call: $20/hour.
  • Consultation on your game project: $20/hour.
  • Layout (InDesign): $11 an hour.
  • Stock Art Shopfront: Postmortem studios have a huge stock art catalogue from multiple artists and we’d love to add you to that storefront. If you’re an artist who wants to sell your stock art but doesn’t want to deal with the accounts and uploads etc with your own storefront (which would be my first recommendation) then I can do that for you for 50% (I round up your payouts though).
  • Voice Work: If you find my dulcet tones to your liking, I’m available for voice over work and narration.

Recent Products

Clipart Critters MEGABUNDLE:  A once in a lifetime offer (at least until September the first) this is ALL of Brad McDevitt’s stock art – up to number 400 – at a HUGE discount. This is basically a company start-up resource which will provide you with plenty of fantasy, horror, science fiction and modern images to kickstart your company into progress with low initial overheads for art. It’s also a fantastic resource for existing companies.

Diversity Dungeons: Despite claims to the contrary from all sides involved this is intended as a fairly serious examination of diversity issues in gaming from a world-building/game design and publishing perspective. It outlines the obstacles and methods to overcome including (or not including) diversity in your games and some material – from bitter experience – on the current febrile atmosphere around games publishing.

The Cathedral of Misogyny: An affectionate piss-take of 4chan, internet culture wars and hyperbole via the medium of a comedic 5th Edition D&D adventure, based upon a scenario I wrote as an introduction for a new player coming in from computer games. Part of the scenario was played online and there’s a Youtube video of it here.

Fistful of Horror 3: A collection of horror scenario ideas in the theme of my 100 seeds. System neutral but geared towards modern horror.

Fifth Fantasy – The Brock: A whole new race for you to use in your 5e games. The Brock are a reclusive, grumpy people with a pragmatic and dogged mindset. Fierce warriors, they protect the forests and occasionally venture out into civilisation – usually to be disapproving. This is a whole new race and culture for you to add into your games and comes with a set of Brock-centred magic items to use as well.

Our entire catalogue (other than the newer items) – easier to browse than the online sites can be downloaded for free HERE. http://www.rpgnow.com/product/176399/Postmortem-Studios-Publisher-Catalogue-2016&affiliate_id=50144

#Gamergate the Card Game Update

propaganda-IIProfessional

I still have no word on exactly what is going on with the withdrawal of the game from sale at DriveThruRPG. They’re not strangers to controversial products (one of them a personal attack on me) and hosting, or selling, them and the parent company ‘OneBookShelf’ was founded by former White Wolf people who had plenty of encounters with censors and the ‘moral majority’ in their time. It seems, then, to be an odd position for them to be in.

Complaints about various products have been made before, not just mine, but it has been left to the market and the review system to deal with it. The question must then be asked ‘what’s different this time?’

There’s a few of answers to that, some of which I have alluded to in previous commentary.

Firstly there’s the fact that the whole debate has become much more heated. Not taking a side is now taken as being in opposition to whatever the righteous cause of the moment is and that carries more cost than it used to.

Secondly the lunatics are now running the asylum, much more so in tabletop gaming than in even computer gaming. For all the complaining done about humour that ‘punches down’, the supposedly dis-empowered are now very much the ones wielding power.

Lastly, this time we have a company abusing their position and market share to bully and prosecute their agenda.

Solis

Hanrahan

Both these gentlemen work for Evil Hat and the obvious implicit threat is that they would remove their products, impacting the reputation and profitability of OneBookShelf far more than I could. This is not only unethical, but possibly illegal under competition/antitrust law. Fred Hicks, also of the company, has issued a rather mealy mouthed retraction, misusing (ironically) many words but let’s take him at his word. If Evil Hat is not threatening such action then there is now no justification for removing the product and hopefully we’ll see it back up soon (early next week). I call this a retraction because I do not think it is a remotely unjustifiable deduction from those tweets and other information to see that this was strongarming, even if Hicks himself was not involved.

The game has been submitted to other sites but because its the weekend I am unlikely to hear anything any time soon about those either, as both sites have product review processes before they approve something for sale. We’ll see what happens there.

I am, admittedly, a free-speech radical. I think even things deemed ‘hate speech’ should be allowed as, in my opinion, this merely exposes bad ideas to scrutiny and ridicule. To me at least, silencing is never a good idea no matter what we’re talking about. Pragmatically though I meet people half way and am willing to understand when we’re talking about genuine hate speech, exhortations to violence and so on.

It remains hard, however, to see what any possible objection to the Gamergate card game could be. It’s a – somewhat vicious – satire on the whole situation but it is not in any way illegal, obscene or otherwise something that should trigger anyone’s ire. The sole reason for anyone’s objection seems to be that it is connected to Gamergate and that because people have misconceptions about that movement.

Some have, apparently, decided to characterise it as a hate group and have – on that basis – decided to believe their own press and to act as though it is the KKK or something (a comparison that has been made with all earnestness). This is ridiculous, it’s genuinely a consumer revolt against corruption in games media, censorship and politicisation.

The irony of company strongarming to censor a product relating to a consumer revolt on these issues is obvious.

The implications for any small or micro-publisher of these events are worrying too. Why should anyone else, let alone another company that is your rival, get to decide what is and is not acceptable? If this card game now, how can we be secure that other ‘controversial’ material will not suffer the same fate in the future?

Philosophical

Like it or not we are in the midst of a culture war. The hard won liberalisation of media and personal action and accountability won over the last sixty odd years – at great cost – are under severe attack. What’s bewildering is that these freedoms are under attack from people who consider themselves to be liberal and progressive.

There is nothing progressive about censorship.

There is nothing progressive about interfering in people’s consensual sexual freedom.

There is nothing progressive about inciting and sustaining moral panic and emotional thinking over reason to prosecute personal agendas.

America is – somewhat – insulated from governmental censorship by its first amendment, but other countries are not so lucky and American activists find other ways to silence things they don’t like.

In the UK for example we have rarely seen such a huge roll-back of sexual and personal liberty. The most recent ban on the production of certain pornography, for example, is just part of a much more general thrust of censorious culture. For all that these bans have been decried as anti-woman (they include a ban on depicting a squirting female orgasm for example) much of the new attitude stems from modern feminism, in particular anti-porn campaigner Gail Dines and groups like No More Page 3 or Bin the Lad’s Mags.

That these groups’ efforts are in perfect alignment with the moralising conservatism of the ruling Tory party seems to give them little or no pause, as does the thought that they are now working side-by-side with people they used to fight, people who wanted to ban ‘homosexual propaganda’.

This is why I have regarded these conflicts as so important, why I have involved myself so deeply. Liberty and freedom are important to me, especially freedom of expression. The ability to make art, to present ideas, is a fundamental human right as enshrined in places as wide and varied as the US constitution and the UN and EU charters.

Strangely, standing up for free expression, rationalism, skepticism and other values very dear to me I have been repeatedly accused of being conservative, reactionary, homophobic, transphobic, racist, sexist, misogynistic and heaven knows what else, all of which couldn’t be further from the truth.

This is, perhaps, what makes this… neo-puritanical  movement so dangerous. They are willing to betray their own – claimed – left and liberal values, on little to no basis, to silence not only their genuine opposition but also those who disagree with HOW they go about their goals rather than what those goals actually are.

This isn’t a left/right cultural or political conflict, it’s an authoritarian versus libertarian one and one where liberal – in its other meaning – redefinition of terms is used to justify the most terrible actions and to cover up their hypocrisy. ‘It’s OK when we do it’.

My ideals give us a world in which all people are free to express their ideas, whether I agree with them or not. Their ideals give us a grey world of homogeneous, ‘safe’ ideas that exclude a diversity of thought, ideals and even fiction. I still think a stand needs to be taken against this, long enough and articulate enough that the baseless accusations of misogyny, racism etc – so long used as gags to silence opposition on other bases – lose their sting.

One of the biggest problems that I think we have now is private censorship. A topic I’ve talked about a great deal and one which the kinds of people mentioned above seem to excuse – so long as it aligns with their view.

Censorship is not limited to governmental action and free expression is an ideal and a principle, not just a matter of the law.

We live in an era now in which a very few companies have a de facto monopoly over aspects of our lives. If you’re an author and Amazon won’t carry you, you’re in serious trouble. If you need to take online payments and Paypal won’t do it, again, you’re in serious trouble.

These things can and do happen. Amazon will hide erotica and self-published material or make it so you have to be very specific in your searches to find something. Credit card companies will gouge anyone selling adult products or materials under the pretence of risk. Paypal has tried to do similar in the past, refusing services.

When a company is in such a position – and in the tiny niche of gaming OneBookShelf (DriveThruRPG and RPGNOW) holds the same place – they have a degree of responsibility to safeguard the rights of creators and consumers.

Is that far fetched?

I don’t know that it is. The state already intervenes to defend the rights of minorities. A company cannot refuse service to someone because of their sexuality for example, or their race – and quite right too. Given that precedent is it not reasonable to ask that companies in such a dominant position are required to safeguard basic and fundamental human rights, within reason and so long as it does not create undue problems for them to do so?

Why should Paypal, for example, be able to refuse financial services to legal businesses performing legal work? Why should Amazon be free to censor and delist ebooks, whose cost is negligable to them to host?

Why should Youtube not allow the sharing of consensual, legal adult material? Provided it exist behind suitable filtering and protection.

Good questions to ask in my opinion and ones that will be more and more important in the future.

Personal

Despite still believing very much in the Gamergate battle and the longer culture war that I’ve been a part of for about four years, the sheer cost (personal, professional and in terms of health) is just getting to be too much.

I am heartily sick of being accused of every horrible thing under the sun, especially when they go against my core beliefs and my sense of self. I fight so hard because it is hard for me to leave something unjust unchallenged. If I do something I suffer at the hands of bastards and the inevitable flak fighting draws, if I don’t fight I am betraying my core nature and allowing something horrible to go unchallenged.

If it’s a choice between doing something good and feeling horrible and not doing anything and feeling horrible, the grim calculus (pun intended) should seem obvious.

However, that calculus is changing in part for health reasons, in part because of rather unfair pressure from some dear friends, in part for financial and other reasons. This still pains my idealistic heart and seems like poor reasons not to continue making sacrifices and doing the right thing but I’m fairly backed into a corner right now, and I’m not Captain America.

How would you feel if you were passionate about freedom, for everyone? If you believed strongly in progressive and inclusive ideas – but also artistic freedom? If day after day you saw other creative people seeming to buy into a censorious and controlling agenda because it was easier for them than to rock the boat?

How would you feel if people were determined to trash your reputation by calling you homophobic, transphobic, misogynistic, conservative, things the complete opposite of what you are? How would you feel if people began to believe those lies about you? How would you feel if you were constantly questioning yourself already?

The answer is, not good, and after a while it doesn’t matter that you’re right or that these people are wrong, it’s what people believe – and that so rarely marries up to what’s true, which is frustrating as hell for a rationalist and skeptic, believe me.

So, against my will, I’m going to have to withdraw from the fight, not that I want to and not that it will be at all easy. I’m well aware that’s admitting defeat and that’s like swallowing a shot glass of broken glass shards to me. I’ve been let down a great deal in life by many people I have taken as moral exemplars and to fall short in a similar fashion is devastating. I was always determined not to make the same mistakes – an impossible standard for any human being.

Growing up nerdy, geeky, cerebral, introspective is tough. There are few male-identity tags available to anyone in my generation and its worse for the generations following. Some of the few male-identity aspects available to us are duty, honour, sacrifice and endurance and these aren’t always the best paths to what’s good for you as an individual. They open you up to exploitation, attack and self neglect.

Aid & Comfort

If you want to support me there’s a variety of ways you can do so.

In regard to this issue you can email OneBookShelf and express your concerns (do so politely).

You can buy my stuff from RPGNOW, Lulu or TheGamecrafter – there’s free stuff there too. Feel free to leave a review.

As is now traditional, as a victim of harassment and hatred I am obligated to mention my Patreon.

If you want the PDF copy of the Gamergate Card Game, you can still, for now, get it here.

If you want to know what I actually think about anything, rather than relying on what people tell you I think, you’re welcome to ASK and you’ll get an honest answer.

The big thing I really want people to support at the moment is my memorial art scholarship for fantasy and SF art students. If you can donate art to be sold to support the scholarship or can give money, please do!

1666 and All That

DEFOE FIGURE BG1666 was a rough year for England. There was plague, the Great Fire of London, Charles the Second was re-establishing monarchy and zombies were rising from the grave to feast on the flesh of the living.

I may have made that last one up.

‘Annus Mirabilis’ means ‘Year of Miracles’ and it is the poet Dryden who applied that to 1666 with the deft illogic of the theist ‘God spared us even worse’ and what we would now recognise as typical, British resignation to our lot ‘Mustn’t grumble’.

2012 has been a bit of an Annus Mirabilis for me, in the sarcastic sense. Sure, I’ve got a lot done, covered some new ground, gotten some fiction out (finally!) but it’s also been a shitter of a year as well.

Fuckbrain: My depression was overwhelming for large portions of the year and so it amazes me that I was even half as productive as I have been. I looked death in the face a couple of times this year and stepped back from it. I’m in a much happier and healthier place than I was but this thing still dogs me. I hope me being ‘out’ about it has helped a few people.

DRAAAAAAAMA: This year – and some of last year – has been a time of great drama. I’m not an awful guy, I just like some transgressive things and I tend to try and think and look at things objectively rather than getting my knickers in a twist. Needless to say, when you’re offering an opinion on something controversial this is a recipe for disaster and for being accused of attention seeking. Boy did I ever get a beasting this year from people who self-proclaim to know better.

Consequences of Drama: As a result of people being terrible human beings I’ve had to cut off contact with a lot of acquaintances who couldn’t get past outrage and into substance. It’s just been too wearing. I hated having to do it, I hate cutting off dissent, but if it’s not productive or coherent its no use to me. As a result of being an internet pinata though I’ve made a lot of new friends and the activist side of me, dormant since the 90s, has woken up. I’ve gotten far more involved in anti-censorship issues, sexual freedom issues, mental health and disability issues and other things all because other ‘moral crusaders’ whom I thought of as peers (writers makers, gamers)  have turned out to be dicks. I guess I should thank them really.

Wonderful People: On the plus side, I’ve worked – or begun to work – with some wonderful people over the course of this year. I’ve finally started to feel like what I do contributes or matters or reaches people, and that’s good. I want to single out and embarrass a few people in particular. Family goes without saying and there’s others who need no special mention and know they’re special. I want to give a few particular call outs though..

  • The Missus: Has always stuck by me an believed in what I do even when nobody else has. May this faith finally pay off for her this year!
  • Barbara: The first person to really and truly believe in me as much as my wife. Her moral support has been literally life saving this year.
  • The Crazy GM: He’s had as tough a time as me, probably more so this year. In him, though, I’ve seen how I can have a positive effect on the lives of others. The first to really make me realise that – or to accept it.
  • Rowena: A fabulous artist and someone else who’s had a tough time lately as well. When professional relationships become strong friendships you know you’re doing something right.
  • Brad McDevitt: Brad bought into me and Postmortem Studios right from the very beginning and I owe him a great deal in terms of having the confidence to move forward. His art has inspired and illustrated many projects and its been great to see him back on top.
  • Tim & Salome: You pushed me to take the jump and get into my writing – outside games. You supported my efforts to get ImagiNation out and gave me the oomph to write my first full length novel. I owe you both so much and I wish we’d been closer friends sooner. A good editor you can work with and someone you respect who likes what you do… these things are priceless.
  • Satine: I’ve wanted to work with Satine since I saw her art and I’ve finally gotten to do so thanks to our mutual fans who backed Machinations of the Space Princess. Satine is one of the loveliest people I’ve had the good fortune to work with and she has an infectious enthusiasm that cuts through my weariness like a razor. I think each of us has gotten a little shit over working with the other (see Draaaama) but that’s all the more reason to do it.
  • Nightfall: Dave, Jared, everyone have been great about the bits and pieces I’ve done for SLA. I came up playing it and respecting their work massively so to end up working on it, to be in synch – creatively – with the originators of it and to have your own ideas taken up and writ larger… wonderful.
  • The Indiecon Family: Indiecon is my ‘home’ convention and now I’m known there… to see people actively searching for the games you’re running and bounding with enthusiasm to your stall is great. Dragonmeet is also fantastic, but Indiecon is home.
  • Ms Scary Boots: Here’s to new friends who ‘get’ you, without needing to be faxed a three-ring binder of instructions.

There’s big changes coming for me and Postmortem in the New Year. I hoped to be able to tell you sooner than the new year but things have conspired against that (Christmas… damn you!) All in good time you’ll be informed though and while it will disrupt things a bit for Postmortem, I hope you’ll all be as excited a I am.

No, it’s not a baby, yet.

Going into the new year, I have a few aims which I’m making public so I can be shamed into fulfilling them properly.

  • Write more fiction.
  • Start drawing again.
  • Get back on the exercise kick.
  • Illegitimi non carborundum.
  • Futuaris nisi irrisus ridebis.
  • Take more risks.
  • Do more things for me.
  • Accept – and seek – praise and positive reinforcement rather than ignoring and brushing it off.

I made more money this year than last, despite the ongoing economic problems. I also spent more, investing in more art. Doing charitable projects. Contributing to start-ups and helping out friends in need. Money well spent. As well as assorted freelancing gigs I can never keep track of I released:

  1. Several short stories.
  2. Lots of Clip Art.
  3. Agents of SWING: Minifigs.
  4. Agents of SWING: Gosh, Spies!
  5. Urban Faerie: Pocket Edition
  6. 6-Pack Adventures: THULU!
  7. Traveller: Alienist
  8. Lady Bexington’s Home for Wayward Zombies
  9. Blood Tales: Windycon
  10. Agents of SWING: Untouchable
  11. Blood Tales: Clearing
  12. Camelot Cosmos & several supplements
  13. Colony: Moon
  14. Irrepressible
  15. Steamed
  16. Filthy Shades Cliché
  17. Several ‘Fistful of Fantasy’
  18. Call of Cthentacle: Spankham Asylum
  19. The Big Bad Cthentacle Art Book
  20. ImagiNation
  21. The Description System

Not bad all things considered, eh?

Please continue to support and help me as we go into 2013. Your feedback and appreciation is very much wanted, even needed. Tell me about your character, tell me about your games. Tell me the things you like, the things you want more of, the things you think are missing.

Here’s to a great new year for us all and not another 1666!

A Postmortem Update

I have been very busy, beavering away on my novel, which is almost complete and should be finished by the end of next week. This has taken time away from games writing quite a bit and as I’ve been busy two weekends in a row and have had a bit of a bout of depression things haven’t been proceeding entirely according to plan. Please bear with me!

I’ll be posting some more ImagiNation previews, everything is now done save for a few pieces of art so, fingers crossed, ImagiNation should be out by the end of the month. This will be released FREE on PDF and AT COST via Print on Demand. I’d like to get as much press as possible for this game – since it deals with depression and is intended as an aid/boost to fellow sufferers as well as a game. If you’d like to help me out with that, please get in touch.

I’ve received proofs of all the board/card games I have made – apart from Lady Bexington’s Home for Wayward Zombies on The Game Crafter (links in the side) and I have to say I am very, very pleased with the quality and results. I can’t recommend purchasing outside the US unless you’re willing to spend over the odds but if you are a US customer and want a shiny, awesome copy of Steamed, Final Straw or Cthentacle then go buy! If there’s enough interest there I’ll work on more board and card games.

When the novel is finished, because ImagiNation has been slightly delayed, I will put together the generic version of The Description System (that powers both Neverwhere and ImagiNation) and get that out ASAP.

The last bit of news is that myself and Satine Phoenix will be going ahead with Machinations of the Space Princess but as a FULL game, derived from the Lamentations rules set and aimed at providing fast, furious, simple, Sci-Fantasy adventuring weirdness in a Metal Hurlant style. Sexy, Sleazy, Swords & Sci-Fi. You can get some ideas on where my thinking for the game is going by looking at the Maksa-Jazra blog posts here (though those are more fantasy than SF). This will be an IndieGoGo fundraiser aiming for $1,000 to go to Satine for art. We’re still working out the details but look for a proper announcement sometime next week. Excess money will go to stretch goals, more art and some money going to me for the time it will take to write. It’ll be a ‘whatever amount is raised’ fundraiser.

After that, it’ll be on to a second novel and I hope you’ll all be as supportive of that endeavour as you have been of my games writing!

If you want to check out my already published short stories, you can get them at Amazon or Smashwords (just search for my name on the Nook, iBook etc stores).
