#RPG #TTRPG #DnD – Things by me that aren’t sold by me!

You can get a lot of stuff on RPGNOW, and some of my freelance work is up there too. If you buy using these links, I also get a kickback, which is helpful to me! So worth pimping some of these out! Plus, I wrote them, so you know they’re cool. I’ll get a kickback if you use this link to purchase anything from there, so if you want to help me out on a more regular basis, you can bookmark that link and use it whenever you go to RPGNOW!

Like a hell of a lot of other game designers, I did a lot of stuff for D&D 3.5/Pathfinder. Amongst those, I wrote a good chunk of CITY OF STORMREACH for Eberron, bringing the setting from D&D Online (which I was in the position of having played) into tabletop. It was a bit of a challenging project with far ‘too many cooks’ making it hard to coordinate, but people seemed to like it!

Books of feats and other rules faff were a plage on 3rd edition, and I did more than my fair share of spreading that plague, but always with an eye to making things fun rather than just making things for the sake of it. I did a couple of Unorthodox books, RANGED COMBATANTS and MONK FEATS.

Louis Porter Junior is a rapid-fire powerhouse of OGL material and I worked with him on two things. One of these, the underdeveloped Pirates of the Bronze Sky, had me fleshing out races such as the KAYLATHEON and TOCARRA. With a little work these might even make interesting character races for Starfinder.

Much more complete was our horror/post apocalyptic setting ‘Obsidian Twilight’ over which I had a lot more influence. There’s a lot of material available for that, some of it free. So do check out the OBSIDIAN TWILIGHT CAMPAIGN SETTING and other material like THE WELL OF DEAD FLESH, OBSIDIAN APOCALYPSE, and more.

I also wrote an unusual adventure ‘Cross City Race’ for 4e in DUNGEON, but easily adaptable to other versions. That was good enough for me to win signed copies of the 4th Edition core books. Cool then, a source of eternal shame now!

For 5th Edition I’ve written a couple of third party products, freelance, for Asatania. THE PRISONER OF SPUR ROCK and THE NEW MINE MASTERS, which have been praised for accessibility and atmospheric writing.

Way back in the mists of time, when men were real men, women were real women, and small furry creatures were called halflings, I wrote a d20/OGL PUBLISHING GUIDE. Some of this is out of date, but since the OGL is still being used it’s not quite as out of date as it could have been. You may still find it useful.

Outside of D&D I’ve written material for lots of people. Not all of it is still available, it seems, or I’m not listed as a contributor, but of those that do there’s still plenty.

84193For Victoriana I contributed material to FACES IN THE SMOKE and FAULKNER’S MISCELLANY. I always preferred a more grounded type of Steampunk, so you may find the parts I wrote – at least – suited to other Steampunk games than the Victorian Shadowrun that Victoriana brings to mind.

While my relationship with the SLA Industries team has become a little fraught since Gamergate they still make very good stuff, and Dave Allsop is an artistic genius with a mind for horror that is unparalleled in games media, in my opinion. More recent material the publish with my name to it include URSA CARRIEN and HUNTER SHEETS 2.

If you’ve like my other fiction, you might enjoy the story I contributed to the DARK HARVEST collection, a number of stories set in the Legacy of Frankenstein RPG setting.

Some of my stuff has been republished in nicer format by Chronicle City, where I am still partnered with keystone of the UK RPG scene, Angus Abranson. We hope to get back into production there eventually, meanwhile you can buy the following things there:

FOREVER SUMMER: You play as a gang of children solving mysteries in the town Oceanview. If you liked Goonies, Monster Squad, Explorers, Eerie Indiana or even Stranger Things you might find something fun here.

@CTIV8: This is the second edition of my activist game, drawing on influences such as Anonymous and Global Frequency, it’s about ordinary – but skilled – people, making a difference in the world. This second edition is much tighter and more playable.

ARS GOETIA: If you’re after an ‘old school’ magic system that isn’t just the same old ‘whiz-bang’ Vancian magic or similar, this is for you. Based on the Goetia, a ‘real’ book of magic, this allows you to create a magician whose power and skill derives from his pacts and command over demons, angels and spirits – and whose soul is always at risk. This would work well with RPGPundit’s Lion & Dragon, with a bit of kitbashing.

dice-png-transparent-images--png-all-4100 SEEDS: I still publish most of these myself, but several turbocharged editions were created for Cubicle 7 and the rights have since moved to Chronicle City. So if you want the more professionally laid out versions of 100 FANTASY, 100 SCI FI or 100 HORROR adventure seeds, you know where to look!

#AprilTTRPGmaker Describe your work

freepngimagesThat’s a complicated question for any creative person, perhaps even more complicated in games where so many different things have to come together to make a game. Then you have the problem that whatever your intent and purpose with your work, people will ignore it and do what they want anyway. Plus they’ll always interpret and project things onto your work that you never even intended.

It might sound like a cop-out answer, but the goal is different with every piece of work. Sometimes something might be artsy or indie-oriented, another time conventional and old school. I have no huge or particular loyalty to any single way of doing things. I like diversity – in the proper meaning of the world – and try to design games synergistically so that setting and rules work together to support each other. If there’s a theme, I suppose it’s that. The right tool for the right job.

I’m interested in ideas, politics, freedom and every game is almost like a mini-experiment to see how people react and what they do with it.

I can’t point to any single, common thread but if there are any they include that synergistic, adaptive approach, working on several levels beyond the surface analysis, a casual writing style and a love of controversial topics and pushing buttons. Those things are interesting to me. Even ideas, beliefs and so on that I do not personally hold.

I also like to make fun of things, prick egos and to satirise pomposity – wherever it appears.

I’ve worked on conventional and indie games, horror, SF, fantasy, for big and small companies, on existing games and designing my own systems.

I suppose, most of all, overriding everything else, I just want games to be fun, but ‘fun’ can have many different definitions – even just for me.

Chronicles of Gor – Dead Trees

FUND IT!

It’s been suggested by some that I’m just in this for the moolah (which at this point remains to be seen), rather than being a TruFan™.

Here are the Gor books that I was gifted some 20+ years ago.

And some of my favourite covers.

As you can see. They are actual, real, physical books, wot I own.

The Roger Dean-esque font is delicious, but sadly probably a little tooooo 70s for anything but nouveau-prog rock album covers any more. The free font Medusa is very similar, if you fancy having a go with it yourself.

Some of the fantasy greats worked on covers for the paperbacks.

Burns being one of my most favourite fantasy artists, and the one I think made the best Gorean cover, this one for Explorers of Gor.

With an art pedigree like this, you can see why I want enough money to make these books visually striking!

#RPG Yard Sale

gremlins-1984-chinatosskny

I’m going to be boring you to tears with appeals, news, crowdfunding etc over the course of this week. Here’s why:

Winding down Postmortem Studios after joining Chronicle City means my income stream from my own company has slowed tremendously and there’s always a lull between Gencon and Christmas. New companies – as anyone with a knowledge of business will tell you – take about three years to break even and make a profit and Chronicle City is only about 18 months into full time, so I’m stuck between one income decreasing and the other building up over time. I’ve also been hit with a bunch of house costs (that need to be settled before winter), car costs and other expenses and issues including my mental healthcare (aid with cleaning the house and regularly attending therapy to keep me capable of working). The money I do have is earmarked for artists, editors and some of the house repairs that need doing. As such I’m asking for your help in a number of ways over the coming weeks.

I know that I’m a controversial figure, but I have always done my best to try and help people out and to be there to offer an ear, support, financial and emotional and to otherwise be as good a guy as possible to my extended community of weirdos, freaks and nerds. Now I need your help and I hope you’ll help me out over the next couple of weeks as I ask for your aid.

Step one is a big ‘yard sale’ of old RPG items, though it pains me to get rid of them as there’s a lot of memories. There’s a lot here, especially old World of Darkness material and I’m sure there’s some collectors or LARP groups that still play in the oWoD who will appreciate the chance to pick up old lore cheap.

If you’re in the Hampshire/Wiltshire/Berkshire area and have access to transport, you’re welcome to come down and pick items up that you want to buy. If you spot anything you want to purchase drop me a line on twitter @grimachu, on facebook, on G+ or EMAIL me.

Make me an offer, postage will vary depending on how much stuff you want, but guesstimate about £1 per item, hardbacks will be more. I’ll consider any offers and I need to sell stuff quickly.

Happy Birfday to Meeee!

claptrap_happy_250It’s my birthday. 21 all over again!

If you want to do something nice for me buy some of my fiction or leave me a review where you’ve bought something else. Either of those would be lovely 🙂

Like my games? You may like my fiction.

As well as writing and making games I also write fiction. I completed a set of short stories and my first novel this year. Not all of them are up for sale but some are and they might make good stocking-stuffers for people you know with kindles, tablets and all that mularky.

If you like my games you’ll find a lot of the same sort of playfulness, imagination and quirkiness in my stories – you’ll also find hints of ideas that I’m working on and even traces of worlds used in my games.

In swinging London, consulting for the police on strange cases, Mimsy operates out of her trendy flat. A heady concoction of mysticism, psi and LSD gives her access to the psycheverse, a spirit-dimension There are things in the psycheverse that long to gain access to the real world as well and Mimsy may well find herself a conduit for evil spirits like Mean Mr Mustard.

A New Hope from Ghostwoods Books

Just as soon as I’m able I hope to publish some of my collected short stories or a novella through this and I wholeheartedly and absolutely endorse the ethos, aims, goals and attitude espoused on the press release below. You can read the original – and more at ghostwoods.com

***

I’m excited to be able to announce that as of today, my Fair Trade publishing house Ghostwoods Books is open for business. We’re launching with a slate of four exciting new novels, and my motto – which I’m absolutely determined to live up to, no matter what – is ‘Great Books at Great Prices’. To that end, I’m bringing you the very finest new fiction out there. As traditional publishing continues to disintegrate, Ghostwoods Books offers something older publishers never have – a genuinely fair deal for authors and readers alike.

But what does Fair Trade publishing mean? Well, I drink a lot of coffee. I’ve been impressed with the Fair Trade initiative, given how badly screwed coffee growers tend to be. Growing coffee takes years. So can writing and publishing a book. In practice, this translates to a 50/50 income share with authors. If I can’t make my wages and expenses out of my half of the income, I don’t deserve to be publishing. I’ve been writing for 20 years, and have more than 100 books out there. I’m determined to be the publisher I always longed to find.

But Fair Trade has to extend to readers, too. Traditional publishing is falling apart under the weight of its own greed. Far too many companies have been unfairly avaricious for too long, complacent in their power as Gatekeepers of what gets published. The digital revolution has changed all of that. Readers are sick of being treated like stupid, naughty children. For the reader, Fair Trade means a great book, well written and fairly priced, prepared to full professional standard, free of crippling DRM. Every Ghostwoods book has been painstakingly laid out, proof-read, and then proof-read again.

The Ghostwoods launch novels represent the best in modern fiction. You can see the covers just to the right of this post. Click on one, and you’ll be taken to that book.

All Lies and Jest, by Kate Harrad, is a counter-culture thriller with a delicious vein of dark humour. In it, you’ll meet crazed cultists, psychopaths, lettuce-eating vampires, and a chilling conspiracy to bring about the end of the world.

American Monsters, by Sezin Koehler, is a post-modern feminist horror, and a savage indictment of rave culture. Its heroines are traumatised, quirkily super-powered, and absolutely not putting up with any more shit.

Ghost Patrol, by P.D. Jordan, is a tense science fiction story. When a brilliant young space captain is captured by the enemy, he finds himself thrown into a lethal game of psychological cat and mouse with his would-be reprogrammers.

SwitchFlipped by Greg Stolze is an exciting urban fantasy about a normal guy who gets drawn into a lunatic reality where people can turn into electricity, where ghosts live suburban lives, and where nothing is impossible, if you’re prepared to pay the price.

The digital revolution is a very exciting time to be a reader. It’s exciting for writers, too. I’m determined to bring the two together, as pleasantly and generously as I possibly can.
