#RPG – Dragon Warriors Game Stream is Recruiting Players

Hello there!

With people starting to trickle back to work, our regular twice-a-week streamed game of Dragon Warriors has gotten a little thin on the ground. After having to had to miss a week due to illness, we had to cancel a game tonight due to lack of players.

That’s a shame.

As such, I’d very much like to extend an open invitation to anyone who’d care to join us on either our Tuesday or Saturday game slots, one or either (we just ignore the continuity error if a player can’t make it). We have space for, maybe, one or two more players.

We play from around 7:30pm UK (2:30pm EST), to around 10-11pm UK, depending how people feel. We run on Hangouts, and stream to Youtube. You don’t need to show your face – if you feel shy.

The system’s simple to pick up, and the best way to do so is to play, plus we have pregenerated characters to pick from, so all you really have to do is show up!

I intend to keep this going – running games online – into the future, long past COVID, running other games of all kinds. So if DW doesn’t take your fancy, perhaps something else will.

#RPG – Postmortem Studios Update June 2016

gor-illo17_sketch

Here’s a quick monthly update on the current state of affairs here at Postmortem Studios.

Personal
I’m a lot healthier than I have been and am working full time again for the first time in about three years. It’s taking a bit of adjustment  but so far I’m keeping it up. I’m using this energy and effort to try and keep up a regular schedule of small releases and freelancing and to build up to regaining the financial independence and self reliance I had before depression slapped me around like a ruler meeting a Catholic schoolboy’s hands.

So far this has only been going on for half of last month but I still treat that as something of a victory especially since I’ve been able to raise my monthly income by about 50% just within that period. It feels good – but exhausting – to be back on the horse.

If you want to support my work and help me out, you can donate to my Patreon, and I’m looking for ideas as to what I can offer as Patreon rewards, but at the moment all I can offer are warm fuzzies.

Work Update
At the moment I’m primarily focussed on finishing off and putting out older material that wasn’t completed. This is primarily because I need to put out material quickly at the moment, meaning it’s all going to be more support material for existing games and odd little interesting notions and side projects. I also have a few people working for me – sadly pseudonomysly – on projects that I’m ‘not allowed’ to look at.

Gor is still very nearly there. There is another slight delay which, again, isn’t anyone’s fault. This project has, I swear, been cursed. Everything that could get in the way for me or the artist has done. Still, we should hopefully be on course for the end of the month. Fingers, fucking, crossed.

Services
I am a 15+ year veteran of the tabletop game publishing world with experience in freelancing and self publishing. I’ve worked for Wizards of the Coast, Steve Jackson Games, Nightfall, Cubicle Seven Entertainment and more. I have also written fiction and worked on social media computer games, packing a lot of meaning into short pieces of text. As a self-publisher I have overseen every step of the publication process from concept through to publications including writing, editing, layout and modification.

Here’s some of the services I can offer, and the minimum prices offered – though anything is negotiable up or down depending on the client.

  • New writing (raw text) $0.03c/word.
  • Proofreading/Light Editing/Commentary $0.01c/word (second and third deeper passes are possible).
  • ePublishing/RPG Publishing consultation Skype/Hangout/Call $20/hour.
  • Consultation on your game project $20/hour.
  • Layout (InDesign) $10 an hour.
  • Stock Art Shopfront: Postmortem studios has a huge stock art catalogue from multiple artists and we’d love to add you to that storefront. If you’re an artist who wants to sell your stock art but doesn’t want to deal with the accounts and uploads etc with your own storefront (which would be my first recommendation) then I can do that for you for 50% (I round up your payouts though).

Recent Products
Clipart Critters MEGABUNDLE:
A once in a lifetime offer (at least until September the first) this is ALL of Brad McDevitt’s stock art – up to number 400 – at a HUGE discount. This is basically a company start-up resource which will provide you with plenty of fantasy, horror, science fiction and modern images to kickstart your company into progress with low initial overheads for art. It’s also a fantastic resource for existing companies.

Diversity Dungeons: Despite claims to the contrary from all sides involved this is intended as a fairly serious examination of diversity issues in gaming from a world-building/game design and publishing perspective. It outlines the obstacles and methods to overcome including (or not including) diversity in your games and some material – from bitter experience – on the current febrile atmosphere around games publishing.

The Cathedral of Misogyny: An affectionate pisstake of 4chan, internet culture wars and hyperbole via the medium of a comedic 5th Edition D&D adventure, based upon a scenario I wrote as an introduction for a new player coming in from computer games. Part of the scenario was played online and there’s a Youtube video of it here.

Fistful of Horror 3: A collection of horror scenario ideas in the theme of my 100 seeds. System neutral but geared towards modern horror.

Fifth Fantasy – The Chancer: A new 5e D&D character class, based around the gambler archetypes found in Japanese RPG computer games. This will become a series and, perhaps, a setting if there are a few more sales.

Our entire catalogue (other than the newer items) – easier to browse than the online sites can be downloaded for free HERE.

#Gamergate Building a DiGRA Alternative

158736-174429-doktor-sleeplessAs we all know, groups like DiGRA are a problem.

These are pseudo-academic platforms presenting opinion as fact with no rigour, no attempt at objectivity and seemingly much more about pushing particular agendas rather than determining what is true/correct, or what is useful to people who make games or want to make games.

We desperately need an alternative.

Building an alternative will not be an easy matter and so I think it is best to start relatively small and idealistic, and then to let things change over time as needed, allowing such an attempt to adapt and fulfil its role – provided that it doesn’t lose sight of its core principles.

As I say, this is a daunting task but one I think that can be accomplished. It just needs a little push and I intend to give it the good ol’ college try.

In essence we’re creating a new field here, as ‘ludology’ is dominated by extremely soft humanities and the aforementioned activist pseudo-academia. This would be something more akin to hard science or engineering, dedicated to providing practical information and experience and sharing it amongst game creators with the stated aim of improving games and game creation as a whole.

‘Ludics’ maybe? I don’t know… ludogineering? It’s something that needs to be distinct from ‘ludology’ or ‘game studies’ which are grounded in literary criticism and critical theory and, so, don’t provide anything of actual use.

So the goals of the group/discipline would be.

  1. Preserving and enumerating game-maker experience.
  2. Providing genuine, objective, scientific, academic and experiential insight into aspects of game design and experience.
  3. Providing a genuine academic alternative to DiGRA and their ilk, rooted in harder science and practical purpose.

Contributors must have:

  1. Relevant practical experience in the field of fames (a game maker with a commercial release, a board/card or RPG designer).
  2. A high level of educational attainment in a relevant field (a degree in hard science, statistics, anthropology, sociology, psychology)
  3. Their entries must at least strive for objectivity – creator anecdote being something of an exception, if clearly stated.

I would also suggest that all material produced as this enterprise gets under way be considered open source, perhaps under a creative commons license allowing people to reformat, freely distribute or even to sell independently or as part of larger treatise etc in order to help support projects and help to make the work worthwhile for people who contribute.

I would hope to get groups like League For Gamers on board and to get the support of independent gaming news sites to reproduce the entries in some form (another reason for going open source).

As a way of starting this off from humble beginnings I would suggest that it begin with an open call for ~1,000-1,500 word essays/notes on a topic, every couple of weeks or every month, just to see if there’s the interest or that the interest can be built up. This would, then, form a short ‘journal’ of sorts, on a particular topic or aspect of game design that would-be game designers or existing game designers could tap into or look at.

Now, obviously this is starting from #Gamergate, since the impetus to provide an alternative to DiGRA that is more genuinely game and design based comes from there, but it would not remain (or even really start out as) a #Gamergate thing. Much like Based Gamer, Deepfreeze and the various indie games sites that have sprung up, it would carve its own path to become something more long lived.

It should also seek to move into testing and confirming (or debunking) its own hypotheses, conducting surveys and eventually providing harder data.

  1. Would you be interested in reading such a ‘journal’?
  2. Would you be interested in contributing to such a ‘journal’?
  3. Would you like to see a more practical, pragmatic and useful field of game study?
  4. Do you have a better idea for a name than ‘Ludics’? (It mixes Greek and Latin, so is ‘bad’, perhaps ‘paichnidics’ instead? – from the Greek ‘paichnídi’, meaning toy, game or trick, and already used as part of the Greek for ‘video game console’)*.
  5. Would you be interested in contributing to a first attempt, perhaps on the topic ‘What is a game and what is the appeal of games?’

Let me know.

#Gamergate – Conventions, Calumny and Badgers

calgary_expo_on_gamergate_by_kukuruyoart-d8q1lhpAt the Calgary Expo this weekend – a big nerd convention in Canada – Alison Tieman and the Honey Badger Brigade (a Men’s Human Rights and nerd culture group) were thrown out. The reasons given have been rather varied and sometimes contradictory but tend to cluster around a few accusations.

Before getting into that, here’s a little groundwork.

I am commenting on the basis that:

1). One need not agree with someone on everything in order to agree that they have the right to express their opinions.
2). Free expression is a fundamental human right.
3). Truth matters.
4). Private or public, groups, organisations and events should be held accountable for the things that they do when they are unfair or unethical.

I am also commenting on the basis that:

Conventions are part of the lifeblood of the nerd communities. A chance to get together, share concerns and ideas and to argue on important (YMMV) viewpoints from which D&D edition is best to the representation of female characters or those of racial minorities.

That genuine diversity includes a variety of different opinions and that discussion, dissent and argumentation is ultimately the crucible in which good ideas are tested and emerge, improved.

The Accusations

1. The Honey Badger Brigade Disrupted a Panel

You can see (hear) for yourself here that they did not. They politely – even asking if they could speak – dissented from the majority opinion that was present. That’s it. This cannot be a meaningful definition of harassment or disruption.

2. The Honey Badger Brigade Lied and Misrepresented on their Application

As well as being a Honey Badger, Alison is also the creator/owner of her own comic series and artwork. Her comic is Xenospora and I recommend checking it out as it is interesting work.

The purpose of the stall was primarily to sell and promote Alison’s work, but also as a home base for the Honey Badgers who were also helping and supporting her presence there, as well as being present to participate in panels and to hold the banner for Gamergate and Men’s Human Rights.

There is nothing wrong in any of this.

The Badgers have also been up front, obvious and hardly ‘stealthy’ about their intentions or fundraising either and there’s little doubt that someone will have contacted the expo before they even attended to ‘warn’ that they were going to be there, yet they were allowed to book and their money was taken – now effectively stolen.

You can review the openness of the Honey Badger’s efforts at their site, it’s al archived. Here’s the link.

Their passes were even issued under the Honey Badger Brigade name, so there was no duplicity or secrecy involved here.

At the 34 minute mark in the video in this link (not below) there’s details from the show programme and other material that show they weren’t sneaking.

Screenshot from 2015-04-19 12:30:58

3. They were harassing people.

Not having attended I can’t say whether this is true or not, but the accusations seem linked to the panel non-incident and so this can be considered to be covered under 1. 20+ reports of harassment seems unrealistic and to be brigading.

4. They were selling rape-joke merchandise.

This does’t appear to be true, I don’t think even the meta-rape-joke of Mr Tentacles was present. It appears to be an oblique reference to a particularly uncharitable interpretation of the Vivian James colours of green and purple. You have to be in the know and of a particular mindset to see this as being a rape joke in any way. More information on that can be found HERE.

Comment

When you describe your convention as a safe, diverse and equal space but then censor a group whose main reason to be there is to fight censorship and to present more diverse and little-aired opinions, you expose yourself to ridicule and considerable bad publicity. At the very least I would hope a mistake is admitted, Alison’s lifetime ban from all expo events is removed and that the Badgers get their fees back.

Even if you opose their politics and opinions, I think that any genuine, honest person can see that an injustice has occurred here, though it does serve to underline increasingly widespread problems with convention policies.

If you doubt the sincerity of Alison and the others, tell me that again after watching this.

There is a lot of disinformation going around about what happened and if you see more rumours, excuses or relevant info, please inform me in the comments or via Twitter (@grimachu) and I will attempt to cover it with accurate and sourced information, as above.

Gorean Chronicles: One Week Left – Q&A

For those who are interested, there’s quite an interesting interview with John Norman from 2011 on iO9. It’s not perfect, but it’s reasonably respectful and gives him plenty of space to talk. HERE is the link.

So I open the floor here, or on Twitter (@grimachu), or on Facebook, or on G+ (James Desborough on both) for questions.

I’ve got a few for you guys though…

How can I reach more people this week?

If you haven’t pledged to help the project, how can I get you to?

How can I squeeze more money out of you if you have?

What else can I offer?

What would convince you to pledge?

Here’s a classic Vallejo Gorean cover for you to ogle 🙂

#RPG Yard Sale

gremlins-1984-chinatosskny

I’m going to be boring you to tears with appeals, news, crowdfunding etc over the course of this week. Here’s why:

Winding down Postmortem Studios after joining Chronicle City means my income stream from my own company has slowed tremendously and there’s always a lull between Gencon and Christmas. New companies – as anyone with a knowledge of business will tell you – take about three years to break even and make a profit and Chronicle City is only about 18 months into full time, so I’m stuck between one income decreasing and the other building up over time. I’ve also been hit with a bunch of house costs (that need to be settled before winter), car costs and other expenses and issues including my mental healthcare (aid with cleaning the house and regularly attending therapy to keep me capable of working). The money I do have is earmarked for artists, editors and some of the house repairs that need doing. As such I’m asking for your help in a number of ways over the coming weeks.

I know that I’m a controversial figure, but I have always done my best to try and help people out and to be there to offer an ear, support, financial and emotional and to otherwise be as good a guy as possible to my extended community of weirdos, freaks and nerds. Now I need your help and I hope you’ll help me out over the next couple of weeks as I ask for your aid.

Step one is a big ‘yard sale’ of old RPG items, though it pains me to get rid of them as there’s a lot of memories. There’s a lot here, especially old World of Darkness material and I’m sure there’s some collectors or LARP groups that still play in the oWoD who will appreciate the chance to pick up old lore cheap.

If you’re in the Hampshire/Wiltshire/Berkshire area and have access to transport, you’re welcome to come down and pick items up that you want to buy. If you spot anything you want to purchase drop me a line on twitter @grimachu, on facebook, on G+ or EMAIL me.

Make me an offer, postage will vary depending on how much stuff you want, but guesstimate about £1 per item, hardbacks will be more. I’ll consider any offers and I need to sell stuff quickly.
