Different cultures have different gods, but they will tend to address the same sorts of archetypes – love, war, fertility, motherhood, fatherhood, knowledge, artisanship and so on. The standard model of religion will be polytheism and gods from different cultures will have different – but similar – interpretations. You can see this in the history of pre-Christian Europe (from which I’m drawing inspiration) where parallels exist between deities across cultures (Thor, Ukko and Taranis for example). This set up also allows for relative cosmopolitanism, which tends to be more interesting in fantasy games, as ‘oh, you just worship a different god’ meant less friction, as in ancient Greece and Rome…
